When X went down in Brazil at the end of August 2024 by a Supreme Court decision, there was a large migration of Brazilians to the platform - many of whom remain active. The blockage was news in media outlets worldwide, but discussions about the destination of its users remained somewhat obscured.
Media outlets in the US and other countries were not excited about a new social network where Brazilians could discuss current news.
But, after Donald Trump's election to the US presidency, whose candidacy was boosted by X owner Elon Musk, a mass migration of Americans to Bluesky started to take place, making the social network gain more prominence in the news (see chart below), well above competitors like Threads and Mastodon.
